Accommodations

Accommodations come in all shapes and sizes.

I genuinely believe you end up… where you're supposed to end up. Although it can be scary to let go and see where the day takes you, especially when you are a big planner, in a foreign place, or a little particular about where you lay your head down at night.

After booking my first few nights in advance, I chose to end up where I ended up. Sometimes, that was on the floor with a mat in an old church, and sometimes, that was in a comfy bed with a pretty view. But the option to rough it or spend a little more is always there.

Planning too far in advance can limit you. Maybe you want to walk further, take a rest day, or change which city you stay in.

However, if you need to plan in advance because you're using luggage transfer, 1-2 days in advance is enough and will allow you some freedom.

Here are the places I do recommend booking advane before you even start The Way.

  • If you start in Saint Jean Pied de port there is only two options- walk at least 15 miles to Roncevalles or Book ahead at Orrison which would only be a 5 mile walk. But let me tell you, those 5 miles are a straight up climb.

  • I had a harder time finding accommodations in the last 100k especially in O Perdo.

There are many places to stay in Saint Jean. This host was very kind and it’s a great location.

The hike over the Pyrenees mountains is really tough. Once you reach Orisson it’s a gorgeous place to rest. The beds are nice, the showers are clean, and they have an amazing Pilgrims dinner.

Places I would go out of my way to stay again.

After a long and hard beautiful hike day you come down into puenta la reina and its the first thing you see. They have accommodations of all sorts as it is a hotel and alburgue. They also have a restaurant.

Molinaseca was my favorite town I came across. I liked it so much I cut my day short! This host was so nice! You also have a full kitchen and living room with a terrace.
