Preparing to walk The Camino

The thought of walking long distances can be intimidating.

As someone with a spine fusion and no experience with backpacking here is what I did to prepare myself for this journey.

Physically 

I will say- that you really don't HAVE to prepare. You could show up and start walking, but I recommend putting some effort into strengthening your feet, core, and endurance to make it more enjoyable. 

My training plan

  • 30 minutes on the treadmill. Incline at 12. Pace 3- 3-4x a week.

  • 30 minutes of strength training 3x a week.

  • Walk outside at least an hour a day.

  • Make sure you like your shoes and your backpacks by getting some hikes in! 

Mentally & Emotionally

At first its fun, but when the fun stops, its important to know why you keep going

Answer these questions

Why you want to do this?  What is your intent? 

It could be to have a simple love of walking - or to heal your grief
There is no right answer but when times are hard on the trail and you feel like you’re being broken down, having a why helps you stick through.

Spiritually 

The camino is a historic trail that has so many rich treasures even if your religious or not. 

Do some research before hand ! 

  • The Cruz de ferro is an ancient camino tradition. You bring rock from your starting place, giving it its own symbolism, and once you reach the highest peak on the camino, you set it down.

  • That is one of many rich spiritual traditions you can find along the trail.

Manage expectations. If you come in expecting or chasing something, you probably won't find it.
