Transportation

One of the most appealing aspects of traveling in Sri Lanka is the accessibility of transportation. Depending on the type of trip you're planning and your budget, you have a plethora of choices to make your journey as comfortable and convenient as possible.

🛺Tuk-Tuks: These iconic three-wheeled vehicles are a common sight on the streets of Sri Lanka. They're perfect for short trips within cities and offer a unique local experience.

✨PRO TIP*- download the pick me app before you go. This app is just like Uber. You can either order a ride or see the going rates to insure you’re getting a good deal.

🚌 Buses: Sri Lanka boasts an extensive network of buses, making it an economical way to explore the country. You'll find various classes of buses, from standard to air-conditioned, to cater to different budgets.

✨PRO TIP- Buses are cheaper and more reliable than the trains. Since I was traveling with a small suitcase and a backpack, I thought buses would be a pain with my luggage and trains would be the better option. I was very wrong. The buses are cheaper, more efficient, and more comfortable even if you are carrying luggage. When you get on the bus the conductor takes care of your suitcase, and will remember what stop is yours and help you with your luggage. The buses are also quite the adventure with their colorful decorations and fast speeds overtaking any car.

🚃 Trains: Sri Lanka's scenic train routes are renowned for their breathtaking views. Traveling by train is not just a mode of transportation; it's a whole experience. .

✨Pro tip: The trains are quite the adventure in Sri Lanka. They are unreliable and pre-purchased tickets are ran by the black market. Unless you get first class, it can be quite uncomfortable but a whole cultural experience. I highly recommend riding the famous Ella train.

🚗 Private Driver- For the most comfortable experience, there are tour companies that will hire you a driver and make an itinerary for you. This option is ideal if you are traveling in a larger group or wanting the convenience of a local guide everyday.

Top Attractions

Adams peak

One of the most scared mountain tops in the world!

Home of the  Sri Pada

Sinhala for sacred footprint.

5,500 steps 7km 3,200 ft elevation gain

Christian and Muslims belive after Adam was exiled from Eden he landed atop this mountain- hence adams peak.

Buddhist believe it is the footprint of Buddha during his third and final visit to Sri Lanka.

Galle

Known for its gem and jewelry shops

The city is set on the coast and is surrounded by an ancient wall which was fist built by the Portuguese settlers which was later overtaken by the Dutch.

Since this city was built by Europeans it has such a different vibe than most south-asian counties.

If vibrant narrow alley ways with cute cafes, jewelry stores, and art galleries is your vibe. You have to stop here

Ella Train

The famous train with amazing views where you can hang out the side with locals and travelers.

It is an experience that is so unique to Sri Lanka and you can’t miss it!

I rode from Kandy station to Elle ** station

Accommodations

I suggest making all reservations on booking.com, it offers a wide array of accommodations to cater to all types of travelers and budgets. It is also incredibly easy to find and book stays while also facilitating communication with your host through their app.

One of the delightful surprises about Sri Lanka is that you can find beautiful and comfortable stays for a fraction of the cost you might expect.

While some listings may use the term 'resort' in their title, remember that this is still a developing country. Your experience may not always match the opulence you'd associate with a traditional resort.

Negrombo

The perfect place to stay when you arrive into the country. Airport transportation and breakfast is included. The hosts are also very helpful and share a ton of knowledge.

Hatton

If you choose to hike Adams peak stay here! The breakfast is great, it’s right by the start of the trail, and they help you arrange a driver from the train station. Pro tip - take a car instead of a TikTok from the train station, it’s about a 40 minute- hour drive but super pretty!

Kandy

This place is perfect. Very kind and helpful hosts. They can help you get drivers for the day, help you get to your next location, and they are great company!

Galle

Perfect location to explore Galle. Next to the ocean and all of the shops are within walking distance.

Tangelle

I stayed a month here studying Ayurveda. It is a nice getaway right on the beach with an amazing staff.

I think Sri Lanka will begin to boom in tourism. It offers the same chaos adventure as Thailand, yet the beaches aren’t crowded and the water isn’t polluted with gasoline from the hundreds of boat trips taken a day.

That’s just my hot take!
